New Urbanists periodically gather for high-level discussions on special topics related to placemaking, community building, policy, and design—these bottom-up meetings are called New Urban Councils. Eight councils have been held over the years on topics such as infill and small public spaces, codes and design guidelines, retail, and sustainability. At the Council on Green Architecture and Urbanism in late 2007 in Alexandria, Virginia, for example, new urbanists drafted the Canons of Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism.
