Transportation Engineer/Associate- San Francisco, CA
Overview
Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated member of our staff to support our San Francisco office and Nelson\Nygaard’s nationally recognized multimodal transportation planning practice. This practice emphasizes creative and innovative transportation planning and community involvement, often within a wider set of goals such as economic development, health, and reduced dependence on the private automobile. We are seeking an individual with at 1-3 years of experience and a strong interest in transportation engineering, multimodal planning and design. A background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility is preferred.

Responsibilities
In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to provide project support and task leadership on larger projects and to manage smaller ones. Projects are both local and national, and an ability to travel occasionally is essential. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s senior and junior staff in the San Francisco office, and also with staff in our other offices throughout the country.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate should have a broad range of transportation engineering experience, preferably with a focus on multimodal planning and design. A successful candidate will be primarily responsible for and should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in many of the following areas:
- Multimodal and Complete Streets transportation planning
- Traffic analysis and modeling (Synchro knowledge required)
- Trip generation, distribution, and assignment
- Traffic signal design and analysis
- Integrated street design (AutoCAD knowledge required)
- Design of pedestrian and bicycle facilities
- Conventional and innovative data collection and performance assessments
- Street design guidelines (NACTO, Caltrans Highway Design Manual, MUTCD)
A successful candidate will also be responsible for providing support for and should demonstrate familiarity with some of the following areas:
- Citywide transportation planning and analysis
- Campus transportation planning
- Parking analysis and management
- Multimodal/intermodal facility planning
- Transit station area planning
- Bicycle/pedestrian facility planning
- Complete streets
- Corridor plans
- Specific area plans
- Transit/shuttle service design, planning and operations
- Light rail, commuter rail, and/or streetcar planning
- Transportation demand management
- Graphics (conversion of technical drawings into public-facing figures)
Successful applicants will be expected to:
- Perform additional tasks in support of Senior Staff
- Assist in the development of standard procedures and materials for Nelson\Nygaard’s Design and Engineering practice
- Manage tasks and/or projects within a specified budget and timeframe
- Work successfully with clients, members of the public, and project teams
- Contribute to the preparation of successful proposals and reports
- Analyze a wide range of transportation data and manage the completion of technical analyses, feasibility studies, and other transportation reports
- Prepare effective presentations
- Analyze multimodal transportation problems
- Collaborate with planning staff on transportation engineering procedures
- Organize and supervise data collection activities in the office and the field
At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:
- One to three years of responsible experience in transportation/civil engineering, planning, or a related field.
- A bachelor’s or advanced degree in transportation/civil engineering, urban planning, or a related planning field. An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required.
- Written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitating public workshops.
- The ability to manage complex tasks on time and on budget.
- Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
