Job Description

The Urban Designer performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Design Division, housed in the Charleston Civic Design Center, by performing the following duties. Develops innovative and comprehensive urban design plans and proposals, using a collaborative design process in a studio setting. Establishes and implements project-specific and context-sensitive urban design principles and strategies. Creates and presents a wide variety of graphic products for urban design, including: concept sketches, plans, sections, digital models, maps, diagrams, Photoshop composites, and other renderings. Assists in planning, conducting and reporting back on public meetings with community groups and design professionals to address questions of design and urbanism. Initiates and organizes exhibitions, publications, presentations, conferences/symposia, charrettes, and design workshops. Provides administrative assistance in the daily operations of the Civic Design Center when needed. Researches and documents historic and contemporary precedents to help the Design Division develop its design resources. Answers public inquiries, conducts field interviews and field studies. Performs other duties as assigned related to urban and architectural design. The ability to tactfully and respectfully provide recommendations for enhancement to the design efforts of others is highly desired for this position. An awareness of emerging urban design trends and a firm understanding of basic urban design principles and practices are also essential. The right candidate will bring a mix of urban design theory and practice to the Design Division team.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent; and one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word or similar software. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Trimble Sketchup are essential. Digital drawing abilities and experience with AutoCAD are preferred. Valid state issued driver’s license.
