Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates

Location:

Boston, Massachussetts

Job Description:

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated intern for its Boston office to support the firm’s practice across multiple sectors. Nelson\Nygaard's practice emphasizes creative and innovative transportation planning and community involvement, often within a wider set of goals such as economic development and reduced dependence on the private automobile. A strong interest and some background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility is a must.

Responsibilities:

Intern responsibilities will depend on specific needs of projects that are being undertaken but will likely include research, data collection, spreadsheet analysis, mapping, editing reports, support/field work, and potentially some minor business development tasks. Though much of the work will come from projects in New England and the East Coast, there may be opportunities for the candidate to contribute to Nelson\Nygaard projects across the United States. While travel is not anticipated for this position, candidates must be willing to travel if the need should arise and must have a valid driver’s license.

The intern will work across all Nelson\Nygaard sectors including:

  • Paratransit Planning - ADA, Dial-A-Ride, Demand-Responsive Transportation
  • Coordination of Human Service Transportation / Mobility Management
  • Transit Planning – rural and urban bus, rail, and streetcar
  • Parking and multimodal planning – campus access, parking management, transportation demand management, and bicycle and pedestrian planning

Qualifications and Requirements:

The ideal candidate would be someone who has a bachelor or master degree in a related field and is interested in gaining experience in transportation planning. Above all, we are looking for someone who has a passion for sustainable transportation planning, and is interested in making communities better for our clients and their constituents.

Potential candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent skills in writing, data analysis, oral presentation and problem solving. The candidate must be able to demonstrate basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Additional experience with GIS, graphics (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp), transportation modeling or database analysis will be considered favorably. Potential candidates may be asked to demonstrate their writing and oral presentation skills.

Salary Benefits:

Nelson\Nygaard offers a flexible, friendly work environment that encourages diversity and creativity. This paid internship provides an opportunity to join Nelson\Nygaard for 3-12 months for up to 24 hours per week. The number of hours per week is negotiable depending on your schedule. You will be assigned a “point person” to guide you through Nelson\Nygaard’s intern program and provide feedback along the way.
