Orange County Planning Division is currently seeking planners with design experience. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in urban design and complex multidisciplinary projects, including site design and visioning, master planning, mixed-use land development, urban infill, technical writing, 3D modeling, and graphics.
Representative Duties
- Participates in planning and design projects such as small-area studies, potential infill & redevelopment scenarios, site analysis and design, community visioning and place making, master planning, design charrettes and public workshops.
- Reviews proposed plans, policies, regulations or standards, ensuring consistency with the County's Comprehensive Plan and other applicable regulations. Proposes strategies and recommendations supporting the implementation of a project's goals and objectives.
- Prepares graphics and illustrations, such as conceptual plans, site analysis diagrams, hand sketches, 3D massing models, elevations, sections, or other products commonly associated with urban design and place making projects.
- Participates in meetings with special interest groups, homeowner associations, developers and the general public to evaluate proposed land development projects. Prepares documentation or supporting materials for public meetings, such as maps, diagrams, handouts, agendas and PowerPoint presentations.
- Performs technical research in collaboration with team members; creates written products such as technical memoranda, policy proposals, project reports, white papers, articles, or other materials for public distribution.
- Develops GIS-based spatial analyses, research, mapping or models associated to project-specific goals and objectives.
- Collaborates in strategic planning tasks, assisting the team with the definition of project goals and objectives, timeline, phasing, scheduling, dependencies, milestones, tasks and deliverables.
- Manages specific tasks within projects, under supervision of project manages or senior team members. Coordinates scope, schedules and deliverables with other teams, collaborators, or agencies. Tracks status and progress of active tasks.
- Provides customer service to members of the public, officials, and the development community regarding regulations, policies, land development potential, administrative procedures and other planning-related matters.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in Urban Planning or closely related field of study and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning; or, a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field of study and six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferences
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification or other professional certification or training indicating ongoing professional development activities in the area of urban planning is desired.
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems principles and applications is desired
