Overview

The Intern – Planning and Development assists the Planning and Development Department with various administrative, planning, zoning, permitting, and plan review tasks. This role offers experience in municipal government processes, supporting professional development or fulfilling the internship requirements of their academic program.

All four (4) interns must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a college or university. Interns will work fully on-site for the duration of their assignment. These intern-positions may be of particular interest to students in the fields of planning, architecture, urban design, data analysis, GIS, and public administration.

The Zoning Team Intern will support zoning and land-use work by researching ordinances, preparing zoning summaries, assisting with case intake and review, responding to customer questions, observing public meetings, and assisting with document preparation.

The Planning Research & GIS Intern will support data-driven decision-making by collecting, organizing, and analyzing data; assisting with GIS mapping and spatial analysis; developing dashboards, maps, and reports; maintaining data quality and supporting planning initiatives.

The Building Code Intern will support code compliance and plan review functions by assisting with basic plan intake and reviews; code research; preparation of review comments; inspection coordination and recordkeeping; and responding to routine customer questions.

The Departmental Training Intern will learn key functions, including the permitting lifecycle, municipal customer service, open records processing, permitting 101 basics, customer education, and interdepartmental coordination to support efficient workflows.

Program Schedule

Summer Cohort session from June 1, 2026 - August 15, 2026
(20 hours per week)

Essential Functions

1 Under the supervision of senior planning staff, provide assistance on Planning and Development Department projects and tasks that may include providing assistance the timely reviews of land use- and zoning-related applications, permit applications, design plans, city codes and ordinances, and state regulations for development that is consistent with adopted citywide and department policies.

2 Provide support to the planning division in the development of new neighborhood, corridor and area plans.

3 Assist with the preparation for community engagement meetings related to land use and zoning.

4 Provide research and analysis assistance for special planning, zoning or permitting projects as assigned.

5 Conduct research and provide summary analysis of issues related to the codes and ordinances utilized by the Planning and Development Department including the zoning code, subdivision code, and building code.

6 Assist with project file organization and records maintenance in accordance with city policies.

3 Ability to write clear, concise project summary reports.

4 Critical thinking and strong communication skills (graphic, written, and interpersonal)
