The Town of South Kingstown, a diverse coastal community of 32,000 citizens, has an exciting opportunity in the Planning Department. The Town is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Deputy Director of Planning.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Director of Planning, and in coordination with the Town Council, Planning Board, and other municipal boards and commissions, the professional in this position performs high level technical, administrative, and professional planning work, as well as assists with municipal policy development relating to land use and long-range community planning. This position is responsible for performing various planning related duties, including but not limited to, the processing and review of land development and subdivision applications. Duties include assisting with studies, research, and special projects as required to implement the Comprehensive Community Plan, Multi-Hazard Plan, Harbor Management Plan as well as other important long-range programs; preparing draft Zoning Ordinance amendments and associated materials for review by the Planning Board and the Town Council; conducting site investigations and maps features to help determine potential impacts of specific development projects; assisting with the supervision of consultants and management of special projects as directed; serving as a staff liaison to essential boards and committees as assigned; gathering, interpreting, and preparing data for studies, reports and recommendations. This position will also help prepare applications as required for various local, state and federal grant programs and will complete relevant grant reporting as well as compliance paperwork. In the absence of the of and/or at the direction of the Planning Director may, supervises, and coordinates the work and activities of the Planning staff, in their support of the Town Manager, Town Council, Planning Board, and various Town boards and commissions.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in community planning, urban planning/city planning, regional planning, natural resources science, another closely related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in land use planning, with five (5) or more years in a supervisory capacity and/or a demonstrated ability to supervise/manage staff or a Master’s Degree in Community Planning (MCP) or related field and a minimum of five (5) years experience. Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) preferred.
The starting rate of pay for this 35 hour per week Salary $52.18 - $56.30 Hourly, $94,965 - $102,460 Annually. The position includes a full benefit package.
