Associate Planner
Salary: Grade 15, Step 1: $71,259.91

Description
Under the supervision of the Planning Director or their designee, the Associate Planner performs professional planning work involving the review of development applications, preparation of staff reports, and presentation of recommendations to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Board of Commissioners. The position also supports long-range planning efforts, code interpretation, and public engagement. This is a full-time position requiring strong technical, analytical, and communication skills, with occasional evening meetings.
Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of ArcGIS or similar mapping systems.
- Ability to analyze and compile technical and statistical information.
Knowledge Areas:
- Principles and practices of urban, regional, and municipal planning.
- Zoning, land use, subdivision procedures, and development regulations.
- Effective writing and oral presentation techniques.
Abilities:
- Interpret and explain land use, zoning, subdivision, and planning laws and regulations.
- Communicate effectively in writing, one-on-one, and in small group settings.
- Work independently and collaboratively, accept direction, and complete tasks on time.
- Provide excellent customer service when working with the public, developers, and community groups.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in city, regional, or urban planning or in a closely related field, such as landscape architecture or urban design, is required. A minimum of two years of experience in a municipal planning agency is required; five years of experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducts review of development applications, including subdivision plats, site plans, variance requests, and rezoning requests.
- Writes and presents staff reports and recommendations for Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Board of Commissioners.
- Reviews plans and drawings for compliance with planning requirements and approvals.
- Provides information and assistance to City staff, property owners, developers, community organizations, and the public.
- Assists in developing long-range community plans, transportation projects, annexation studies, and ordinance preparation.
- Prepares maps, graphics, and other computer-based presentation materials.
- Conducts research, surveys, and interviews to support planning recommendations.
- Coordinates with other City departments on planning and zoning matters.
- Responds to public inquiries by phone, email, and in person while providing excellent customer service.
- Conducts site inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and land use regulations.
- Attends and participates in evening meetings of the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Board of Commissioners, and other bodies as assigned.
