Transportation Policy Analyst

Salary: $50,000 - $56,000

Closing: Mid-June

Description
The 1000 Friends of Wisconsin (1KF) Analyst will plan and manage the organization’s transportation program, advocating for equitable transportation and sustainable land use decision-making in Milwaukee and throughout WI. This work aims to reduce carbon emissions, increase equitable access to public transportation, and improve active transportation infrastructure, with environmental justice at the forefront and outcomes of respecting & protecting our ecosystems.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with statewide coalitions and engage with a diverse array of stakeholders on campaigns and projects to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation system.
  • Advocate for policies that promote walking, biking, and transit projects in Milwaukee and statewide.
  • Advocate for more equitable transportation infrastructure, especially opposing unnecessary highway/freeway projects in Milwaukee and statewide.
  • Carry out in-house research and publish reports to advance smart transportation policy.
  • Work with 1kF staff to promote campaigns/projects through social media, e-news, and other basic marketing.
  • Serve as needed on committees and leadership teams statewide and regionally, aligned with our mission.
  • Help identify foundations and granting organizations to bring in new revenue for the organization’s transportation program.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media contacts and appear on media channels to promote our work.
  • Help develop legislative priorities and policies to reform Wisconsin’s transportation system.
  • Advise communities around the state on improving their transportation systems to be safer, more inclusive and cleaner.
  • Attend conferences, summits, & events for professional development, networking, with opportunities to present. 

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in urban planning, environmental studies, or a related field
  • Some experience in transportation, land use, and/or sustainability-based advocacy
  • Knowledge of statewide transportation policies and issues in Wisconsin
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, demonstrating an awareness of social inequalities
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills
  • Good organizational skills and networking skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of the mission of 1KF
  • Living in or nearby Milwaukee, WI 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in urban planning, sustainability, or related field
  • Marketing skills
  • Grant writing experience
  • Experience in working with or advocating against car-centric transportation project(s)
  • Political experience
