Deputy Planning Director

Salary: $135,000 – $170,000

Description
Prince William County is in search of their next Deputy Planning Director who will assist in the leadership of the Planning Department in the second-largest county and one of the fastest-growing counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Deputy Planning Director is responsible for more in-depth knowledge of specific projects assigned to them, coordinating the management of contracts and deliverables, directing responses to media requests, managing between divisions, ensuring deadlines are being met on high-profile projects, and mentoring senior leadership team members as well as getting involved in personnel issues as needed. This position will help implement the County’s Comprehensive Plan which has been approved by the Board of County Supervisors into the Department as it provides future growth and investments in future public infrastructure through the year 2040. The Deputy Planning Director reports to the Planning Director.

Experience and Education
Minimum requirements are a High School diploma or G.E.D., five (5) years of planning experience, and a minimum of three (3) years of supervision/management experience.

Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, or a related field and American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification. Public sector planning, urban design experience, and a demonstrated focus on redevelopment, urban form, and human interaction are also highly preferred. Demonstrated leadership of a staff team and a large work program is also strongly preferred.

The next Deputy Planning Director applies their strong negotiation skills to rezoning initiatives and is familiar with the land use entitlement process and all laws, ordinances, and regulations relevant to leading the Planning Department. A proven leader, the ideal candidate, promotes transparency and makes themselves available to staff and the community at large. They are a proponent of equity and inclusion and consider information from all sources when making decisions.

The Deputy Director is an experienced manager and can inspire and engage with a talented staff. The successful candidate understands the importance of effective communication and team building with the staff to get things done. The next Deputy Director is experienced at mentoring and effectively training their staff for success. The successful candidate builds relationships and cultivates trust across the organization and throughout the community. Recognizing the importance of building and maintaining a positive work environment, the Deputy Planning Director along with the Planning Director leads with empathy, positivity, and compassion.
