Description
This position is the manager of the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department’s In-House Urban Design Studio (DesignWorks). DesignWorks serves as a professional urban design team providing site assistance and design support to both public and private sectors. The DesignWorks team takes on special projects throughout the City of Tallahassee and Leon County to promote and encourage quality urban design within the public realm, public projects, and private development. DesignWorks works with neighborhoods, property owners, and developers in conceptual site planning, and encourages architects, engineers, and other real estate professionals to do their best professional work by facilitating collaboration and incorporating principles of good urban design.

Essential Duties
This position analyzes various urban design and development application requests and writes reports with recommendations for consideration by the Planning Commission, Local Planning Agency, City Commission, and County Commission. They provide staff support for various planning initiatives, such as special area plans. As the manager of the design studio, this position works with the Planning Director on issues related to staffing, project prioritization, project tracking, communications, and integrating and administering the division's operations and service delivery.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of urban and regional planning, with specific focus on Urban Design. Ability to supervise and direct the work of professional, technical, and clerical staffs. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to present technical information to lay groups and the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Skill in the use of personal computers and related programs and applications used in planning and administrative activities.

Minimum Training and Experience
Possession of a master's degree in urban and regional planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, business or public administration, or a related field and four years of professional experience that includes urban, county and/or regional planning; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Class E State driver's license at the time of appointment.
