Planner 3 – Council Liaison

Description
The Nashville/Davidson County Metropolitan Planning Department is seeking experienced individuals to join the Land Development Division. It is an exciting time to be a part of a team that is shaping Nashville’s future.

The Land Development Division is responsible for current planning within the 526 square miles that make up Nashville/Davidson County, including review of rezoning requests, application of overlays, site plans, mandatory referrals, and subdivision requests. The Division also manages the bond process, oversees the Planning counter in the Development Services Center, and performs inspections of design-based zoning projects to ensure compliance.

The Planner 3 position will perform and coordinate professional level work related to management of zoning specific legislation before the Metro Council. The Planner 3 will also manage all text amendments to the Zoning Code. Successful candidate should have experience in drafting, reviewing and analyzing complex text amendments, including working with a range of stakeholders to explain the impact of proposed amendments to citizens, elected officials, and Planning Commission members. The successful candidate will work closely with the Council Office and Councilmembers on council-initiated applications, tracking the applications to ensure all deadlines are met. The position will also track all Planning Commission recommendations and file needed legislation. Must be enthusiastic about current planning and providing excellent customer service. Ability to communicate at a high level with other Metro Departments, development professionals, citizens, and elected officials is desired. Must have the ability to accurately process, review, analyze and critique complex development issues with an emphasis on good urban design principles. Other qualifications include: knowledge of basic legal principles of land development and zoning; knowledge of form- based codes; attention to details; compliance with time sensitive deadlines; strong prioritization and negotiation skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; understanding the interrelatedness of decisions and shows awareness for the long range consequences of present actions; and, ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions and respond appropriately.

Education and Certification Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Planning, or related field, from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of related experience, or Master's Degree in Planning or related field from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of related experience. Current planning experience for a local government is desired and supervisory experience preferred.
