Introduction and Overview
Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation and is a leader in mobility planning and investment that integrates land use with multi-modal transportation choices. In 2022, the City of Charlotte adopted a Strategic Mobility Plan, which expands on the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan’s goal of creating Safe and Equitable Mobility. The City is actively implementing those plans along with several other key initiatives that support them, including a recently-adopted Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and supporting documents such as the Charlotte Streets Map and Streets Manual.

CDOT is a leader in progressive transportation and believes that meaningful and informative community engagement is integral to shaping how Charlotte’s mobility needs are addressed. Creating successful relationships with the community requires dedication, energy, and a thoughtful approach. CDOT is seeking a talented individual with a passion for communications, engagement, and public service to help creatively and effectively share the City’s vision for mobility with the community.

Summary
The Public Coordinator position is housed in the recently formed Strategic Mobility Division of the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) and is part of the team responsible for planning Charlotte’s future mobility networks and investments. This team collaborates across departments, partner agencies, and the community to achieve multi-modal solutions that shape Charlotte’s rapid growth and development while prioritizing safe and equitable mobility options. This position is responsible for increasing public awareness of on-going initiatives and developing and maintaining community relationships.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage and develop collaborative relationships with stakeholders, community groups, and public/private agencies to support the City’s transportation policies and initiatives
  • Develop a strong understanding of the vision and goals of the Strategic Mobility Plan and be able to effectively communicate that vision to the public
  • Organize public engagement events related to CDOT plans, special events, and projects and programs, including scheduling details, ordering supplies, promoting the events, etc.
  • Support CDOT staff with preparation of materials for public events and/or presentations to ensure effective and consistent messaging
  • Provide written and/or verbal responses to questions and concerns from the public about transportation matters and direct questions to other staff or coordinate with other staff as necessary
  • Partner with the Communications team to create new content and coordinate updates to websites associated with the Strategic Mobility Division and upcoming public engagement
  • Maintain and expand collaborative relationships with other City and County agencies and CDOT Divisions
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create clear and informative content that is easily understandable by the public
  • Comfortable establishing and maintaining relationships with residents, neighborhood groups and stakeholder groups
  • Creative individual that can bring new ideas and suggestions for better engagement and communication with the public
  • Exposure to website design and/or Public Input
  • Exposure to social media engagement tools and strategies
  • Graphic design skills a plus
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Interest in transportation and mobility planning
  • Comfortable working nights and weekends, as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience working in communications, public relations, journalism, community development, urban and community planning, public service, community engagement, marketing, social media management, or a related field (internship qualifies)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's level degree from a four-year college or university in communications, public relations, journalism, community development, urban planning, community engagement, marketing, social media management, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, an abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
