SCAD seeks a full-time preservation design professor and academic program coordinator to join the faculty of the School of Building Arts at the university’s Savannah location.

The SCAD School of Building Arts emphasizes sustainable strategies for emerging and historic neighborhoods, city and metropolitan communities at local, regional and global levels. Across multiple locations worldwide, students and faculty collaborate to address international design and preservation issues on all continents, emphasizing the importance of cultural, climatic and economic indices of the built environment and fostering stewardship and evolution of heritage resources.

The successful candidate will be a passionate, motivated educator who is eager to develop an innovative curriculum and foster the connection of design to historic preservation and redevelopment. The program coordinator will bolster the reputation of the program and shape the emergent study of preservation design in a creative, energetic and entrepreneurial academic environment. 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop the new program in preservation design, with a focus on economics, preservation, community development, community-based design, adaptive use and contemporary planning issues
  • Oversee day-to-day administration of the preservation design department
  • Direct, coordinate and evaluate the department
  • Develop and implement curriculum
  • Foster interdepartmental collaboration and continue to enhance the reputation of the SCADpreservation design department in academic and professional circles
  • Oversee departmental budgets, including development and implementation
  • Work with the admission department to recruit talented undergraduate and graduate students to SCAD and to the department
  • Teach classes annually, as assigned
  • Evaluate professors within the department through class observations, a review of student evaluations, a review of service and professional development and a review of contributions to the department’s goals
  • Work with the dean and associate dean to provide professional development opportunities for professors
  • Develop, in consultation with the dean, associate dean and department members, a strategic plan for the department that is consistent with the School of Building Art’s goals and overallSCAD strategic plan

Requirements:

  • Terminal degree or the equivalent in historic preservation, urban design, architecture, interior design, development or a related field
  • Professional experience in preservation, urban design, development, municipal administration or a related discipline
  • Ability to motivate students and faculty to think creatively and critically
  • Ability to work with students and faculty of diverse backgrounds 
  • Experience teaching at the university level is preferred
  • A background in classical design is preferred
