The University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning recently hosted its first Detroit Urban Design Charrette, organized by new dean and long-time new urbanist Doug Kelbaugh. The five day charrette developed plans for a poor inner city site in Detroit called the Lower Cass Corridor. The event drew 100 participants and 400 attendees despite blizzard conditions and canceled flights. Students and faculty from five universities participated on the design teams, led by noted new urbanists Jonathan Barnett, David Sellers, Mark Schimmenti, Dede Christopher, and others. Kelbaugh described the charrette as the largest and most productive of his career.
