The Tolkin Group recently won a competition sponsored by the City of Manhattan Beach, California, to develop Metlox Block, a 3-acre, mixed-use extension of downtown. The developer plans to break ground in late 2000 on the project, which was designed by Moule/Polyzoides, Peter Tolkin, and Duany Plater-Zyberk. Buildings on the block are oriented to the street. Public open spaces include a town square, gateway plaza, courtyards, fountains, interactive art, gardens, and a ceremonial stair. The city plans to develop civic sites connecting to the project, which is obtaining final approvals.
