A study in support of transit

A new study in support of transit was presented by the conservative Free Congress Foundation at the recent Congress for the New Urbanism conference. The study examines the percentage of trips that transit carries in comparison to the trips for which it can compete. In Chicago the authors note that 50 to 60 percent of trips made to the central business district are on transit, a percentage of rail riders that, if they were forced to drive instead, would create massive gridlock on highways. The study was applauded by Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, who wrote that “even conservative state governors want more and better public transit, not less.”
