The NationsBank Gateway Village project is breaking ground

The NationsBank Gateway Village project is breaking ground in the uptown section of Charlotte, North Carolina. The 16-acre, seven-phase project eventually will include 1.2 million square feet of offices, 450 rental and townhouse units, and street-level retail and commercial space designed for each building. It comprises five blocks of West Trade Street. The first phase will cost $125 million. Although the architecture for Gateway Village is modern, the overall plan places emphasis on creating active streetscapes. Parking is in multistory garages on the interior of blocks. Buildings are four to six stories high and fill up entire blocks, with build-to lines at the curb. The project is a joint venture between NationsBank, the third largest bank in the U.S., and Cousins Properties Inc., one of the nation’s largest real estate development companies.
