Millennium Place, a downtown Boston mixed-use project

Millennium Place, a downtown Boston mixed-use project that won an award at CNU X, earned praise in the Boston Globe this summer because, according to architecture critic Robert Campbell, “It understands that city life is street life.” In a July 14 commentary, Campbell said the complex, now known as Ritz-Carlton Towers, “is an amazingly rich mix of different uses in one place.” “There are no fewer than 17 public entrances to the Ritz complex,” Campbell noted. “Several of them are manned by doormen 24/7, so there is always someone on the sidewalk, making the street feel welcome and safe.” The $515 million project – containing 193 hotel rooms, 309 condominium apartments, 63 “extended-stay” suites, 19 movie screens, 1,100 underground parking spaces, sports club, restaurants, bars, and shops — is helping Washington Street recover from “its sad past as Boston’s Combat Zone,” Campbell said. Referring to the CNU award, he said, “it’s (good) that the new urbanists have gotten on board.”
