The Hercules, California, City Council approved a new urbanist conceptual plan July 22 that calls for construction of 1,224 housing units, 42,000 sq. ft. of retail, 81,000 sq. ft. of offices, and 134,000 sq. ft. of flex space on 42 acres of the city’s waterfront. The unanimous vote came in response to citizens signing petitions demanding faster implementation of new urbanist ideas on the waterfront of the city, in the northeastern part of the San Francisco Bay area. Residents, along with developer AndersonPacific LLC, want a walkable, transit-oriented development that would include restaurants and shops. Although the Council action is a step forward, the plan still must go through the city’s entitlement process and must satisfy an environmental review before it can be implemented.
