Getting a monument right

Planning consultant John P. Bergan is leading a campaign to change the placement of a World War II Memorial soon to be built in Trenton’s Veterans Park. As currently planned, the memorial would be centered in the park but would be off center to the facade of the capital building and consequently at odds with it. City Council member Cordelia Staton, the Trenton Historical Society, and others are supporting the effort to realign the memorial so that it does not, as Bergan puts it, “deny the axis that has existed for years.” Bergan is also urging Trenton officials to create a grand boulevard about 1,800 feet long, linking the statehouse — America’s second-oldest capitol building — to the Battle Monument and the historic African-American Nixon School. The boulevard idea echoes proposals that the architect Cass Gilbert made for Trenton early in the 20th century. According to Bergan, this would open an impressive vista and help revive the Spring Street neighborhood.
