The developer of Carpenter Village in Cary, North Carolina, was able to convince local officials that the project’sTND design would result in a 50 percent reduction in vehicular trips. The assertion was supported by research by Cary’s traffic engineer, Wilbur Smith Associates, based in Columbia, South Carolina. “This made a tremendous difference in the off-site improvements that we were required to make,” says Mike Hunter of W&W Partners, the developer. Sales in Carpenter Village have been exceptionally strong, Hunter says. “That’s due to our good location,” he explains, “but even in comparison to other projects in the area, our specific project is doing very well.” Construction is expected to begin this year on the project’s village core, including 110,000 sq. ft. of retail and 45,000 sq. ft. of office space.
