CNU welcomes CNU Utah As 17th chapter

Last month, the Congress for New Urbanism's family of Chapters got a little bigger.

On January 30, 2015, we welcomed CNU Utah as the latest member Chapter of the Congress—a coalition of state, regional, and local organizations that spans from California to Maine. CNU Utah, the seventeenth such Chapter inducted, was formed by CNU members based on momentum from the Salt Lake City–based CNU 21 event, hosted by the city in 2013.

“As we witnessed the positive outcomes that came from hosting CNU 21 in Salt Lake City, CNU members in Utah expressed a desire, interest, and commitment to work towards the formation of a local chapter," said Michael Hathorne, founding Chairman of the CNU Utah Board of Directors. "We immediately formed an organizing committee and began working towards gaining full Chapter status.”

Two years later, Hathorne and fellow CNU Utah leaders are pleased and excited to have achieved their goal. "Having a local Chapter of CNU will be a tremendous tool for us in helping to frame regional discussions regarding more sustainable growth and healthier development patterns in Utah.”

"We're proud to welcome CNU Utah as the latest Chapter of the Congress for New Urbanism," said Lynn Richards, President and CEO of CNU. "CNU Utah will continue to provide the energy and the expanding local knowledge base that a membership-led organization like ours requires. It's a pleasure to see that an event like CNU 21 has left such a positive mark on its host community."

On January 30, CNU Utah held a hard hat tour of CNU Utah’s future home—the Salt Lake City Impact Hub—and hosted an Urban THINK event. At this inaugural event, members gave a series of presentations covering different topics including, air quality, sustainable growth, and how design can incorporate Salt Lake City’s large blocks and unique character.

CNU is proud to welcome CNU Utah to the CNU Chapter family. To learn more about becoming involved in one of CNU's 17 Chapters, contact Gary Scott, Membership Assistant, at gscott@cnu.org
