CNU Executive Director resigning

After six years of outstanding service, Poticha moves on. The Board of Directors of the Congress for the New Ur- banism announced March 5 that Shelley Poticha, the organization’s Executive Director since 1997, will be resigning as of July 1, 2003. Ms. Poticha is leaving the organization to head the new Center for Transit Oriented Development, a national effort to encourage walkable mixed- use development in transit corridors. “We are very sorry to see Shelley leave us,” said John Norquist, chair of the CNU’s Board of Directors and mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “She has done a great job of leading the organization through a period of tremendous growth of interest in the New Urbanism. CNU is now well positioned to assist communities in meeting the demand for walkable, mixed use 24-hour neighborhoods.” During her tenure, Ms. Poticha has guided CNU’s growth into a nationwide coalition with a prominent voice in national debates on urban revitalization, growth policy, and sprawl. She has also forged alliances with major land development interests, environmental and community organizations, and federal agencies. Ms. Poticha will remain at CNU through June to ensure the success of the eleventh annual Congress for the New Urbanism in Washington, D.C., June 19–22 and to permit the Board to conduct a national search for a new Executive Director. Seeking New Challenges “I have loved working with the Congress for the New Urbanism. It represents the best and the brightest in the professions of urbanism and development,” said Ms. Poticha. “CNU has brought mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods into the national conversation, and that allows me to seek a new professional challenge.” Ms. Poticha has been Executive Director of the Congress for the New Urbanism since 1997. Before joining CNU, she was a planner and consultant for 17 years, working with urban and suburban communities, regional agencies, nonprofit groups, community activists, and developers. She has been a senior associate with Calthorpe Associates, a Berkeley-based consulting firm, and the San Francisco Bay Area representative for the Surface Transportation Policy Project. She holds a Master of City Planning from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
