Transformative transit this year

New rail and bus rapid transit routes are being built in virtually every large metropolitan area in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Almost 800 route-miles of new transit infrastructure–most of it with dedicated lanes–is now under construction, at a total cost of almost $80 billion, to eventually serve some three million daily riders, according to The Transport Politic.

Some of these projects will be completed in 2017, and some will start construction this year. Other major projects began construction before this year, but will take several more years to finish. These projects are transformative infrastructure and will spur mixed-use, walkable, transit-oriented development.
