Clarksburg Town Center, a 268-acre traditional

Clarksburg Town Center, a 268-acre traditional neighborhood development (TND) plan by Torti Gallas & Partners that remained on paper for 10 years, is finally breaking ground. Terrabrook, the developer that purchased the project and moved it forward, is the firm behind Reston Town Center and West Park Village, a TND near Tampa, Florida.
Terrabrook hired Stephen Gang, formerly of Torti Gallas and now with SKG Architects and Planners, to redesign Clarksburg Town Center, located in Clarksburg, Maryland. Gang, the original designer, says that numerous design flaws in the plan have been corrected. Most of the residential units — including 80 percent of the townhomes — were front-loaded, and the lot widths varied little. “Now there’s a lot more diversity in the lots — and everything is alley loaded,” Gang says. The central square has been reorganized to include a greater mixture of uses. “We learned a lot in the last 10 years,” Gang explains. “And Terrabrook is more visionary than the original clients.”
Clarksburg, the last rural town on the I-270 corridor northwest of DC, is expected to experience explosive population growth in the next two decades.
