Residential construction has begun in Mission
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    JAN. 1, 2001
Residential construction has begun in Mission Bay, a brownfield development that will cover more than 300 acres adjacent to San Francisco’s downtown. The Mission Housing Development Corporation is building the first complex of 100 affordable apartments. Mission Bay is projected to include 1,700 affordable units among its total of 6,090 residences. Master developer Catellus Development Corporation also announced that it will begin construction on the first mixed-use section of the project in the first quarter of 2001. Designed by Johnson Fain Partners, the plan for Mission Bay incorporates a new campus for the University of California at San Francisco with office and commercial development, bay front parks, a hotel, and residences. At the groundbreaking ceremonies, Mayor Willie Brown Jr. called Mission Bay “the biggest shot in the arm this city has received in more than 30 years.”
