New Urbanism relatively slow to catch on in New England

The New Urbanism has been relatively slow to catch on in New England. According to New Urban News’ annual survey, that region has the fewest examples of any region in the US (there are some notable exceptions, such as Mashpee Commons and handful of infill developments in Boston). A recent article in the Christian Science Monitor highlights Dunstan Crossing, touted as a breakthrough new urban development in Maine. The project proposed in the Town of Scarborough includes a mix of housing types, shops, parks, and streets designed for walkability. If approved, it could be under construction in early 2004.
