Construction began in January in Cherry

Construction began in January in Cherry Hill Village, a TND in Canton Township, Michigan. Unlike the majority of new urbanist greenfield projects, Cherry Hill Village is focused on, and will extend from, the crossroads of an existing community. The hamlet of Cherry Hill was once an important stop on the road from Ann Arbor to Detroit but stopped growing once a new road was built in the late 1800s. The village square with its historic school house will become the center of Cherry Hill Village. Developer Biltmore Properties plans to build 1,443 homes on the 360-acre site, a mixture of three types of detached homes, townhomes, and “manor houses” with rental apartments. A 15,000-square-foot, multistory commercial building on the village square will be built along with the first homes, and will house a general store, an information center, and sales offices. Cherry Hill Village is zoned for approximately 175,000 square feet of retail space on or immediately adjacent to the village square. The master plan by Looney Ricks Kiss was informed in part by a visual preference survey conducted among township residents prior to the charrette. Respondents disposed to TND outnumbered those who preferred conventional development by 4 to 1.
