David Fleeman, 1913-2002

David Fleeman, a partner in development of Haile Plantation in Gainesville, Florida, died November 8 in Miami. He was 88. Fleeman was already semi-retired from a successful career as a homebuilder in South Florida and was serving as chairman of the Florida Commission on Ethics when he joined Robert Kramer in 1978 to begin planning Haile Plantation, a suburban development with a high-density, mixed-use town center greatly admired by new urbanists. “We would not have been able to do that without his active cooperation and encouragement and his patience,” Kramer said. His son, Jeffrey Fleeman of Berkeley, California, remains an active partner in Haile Plantation. Another son, Gregory, of Austin, Texas, remains an investor in the 1,700-acre development. The elder Fleeman, who moved from Upstate New York to Miami Beach with his parents in 1926 at the age of 12, had continued going to his office every day until two months ago. “He was the most ethical gentleman you could ever hope to meet,” Kramer said. u
