In Issue 7 of The Next American City, contributing writer Kenneth Naylor offers a nuanced view of the not-quite new urbanist development known as Aqua, on Allison Island near Miami Beach. Naylor suggests that new urban planning and Modernist architecture mesh comfortably in the 151-unit, 8.5-acre development. His biggest criticism of Aqua, planned by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. for developer Craig Robbins, is its gated entrance — the very feature that prevents it from being considered genuine New Urbanism. The journal is on the web at www.americancity.org.
