Seaside at 25: Troubles in Paradise

A Dec. 9 New York Times article, “Seaside at 25: Troubles in Paradise,” reported that the famous Florida development is trying to repair its eroded beachfront. Some of the protective dunes were washed away, along with the beaches’ white sand, by Hurricane Dennis last July. The other “troubles” the article dwelled on were affordability and traffic. “Houses that sold for $100,000 in the 1980s are now valued in the millions,” the Times said. A sales agent said houses now command prices of about $1,300 per square foot. Seaside and the area have become so heavily visited that developer Robert Davis said parking management techniques will have to be introduced, such as “getting people to park on the far side of town, which you can do with valet parking and better signage.”
