Dan Camp was elected mayor of Starkville, Mississippi, a college town with 22,000 people, in June of 2005. In the last year, Camp has made progress fulfilling a campaign promise to keep the police station and city courthouse downtown. Camp ran for mayor to stop the proposed moving of these civic structures to an automobile-oriented site on the bypass of State Route 25 away from downtown. The city has identified sites for the facilities, which are currently housed in cramped quarters in the city hall, Camp told New Urban News. Camp has hired a full-time planner who has begun work on a new comprehensive plan. Meanwhile, Camp is still the developer of the Cotton District, a new urban infill development. The latest plans include street level retail below two floors of apartments on University Drive. Camp wants to rent very small retail spaces, less than 380 square feet, to students for under $400 a month.
