The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded

The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded $59,000 to the University of Miami’s Center for Urban and Community Design to document sustainable building practices and techniques. The Center, directed by Sonia Cháo, hosted a 2.5-day symposium in January 2007 called “Under the Sun: Sustainable Innovations & Traditions.” It explored traditions of vernacular architecture and sustainable urbanism for temperate and subtropical climates. The federal funds will help to develop and publish a book on the presentations. A school workbook will make the lessons of sustainable design understandable for young children. NEA Design Director Maurice Cox said the deadline for the next round of NEA stewardship grants in design is August 11.
