Job Description
The Urban Designer will provide four types of urban design services: (1) urban design and graphic illustrations for planning reports, policies and standards utilized by City Council, the Planning Commission, and other city boards and committees; as well as other departments (2) specific design and illustrative work for improvement projects such as urban streetscapes, public plazas, parks, greenways, pedestrian and bikeways, wayfinding systems and similar projects; (3) concept level design assistance in a collaborative capacity with private sector designers during the early stages of development projects; and (4) participating in and leading public design workshops, charrettes and neighborhood meetings.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in urban design, urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, architecture or similar design-oriented discipline. Regardless of the particular degree conferred, candidates should have considerable training in and application of urban design principles and practices.
Experience
At least three years of recent paid full-time experience in urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, and project or development design. A body of work that demonstrates considerable experience in conceiving and executing design plans and projects. (Portfolio of representative work projects required) Proficiency in design software such as Sketch Up, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCad, 3D Modeling Rendering and Microsoft Office required.
Hiring Range ($51,168 to $68,000 Annually)
The starting annual salary for the urban design position will be market competitive depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. In addition, the City of Wilmington offers an attractive benefits package, summarized above right.
