Community Planning & Design (CPD) is a division of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency (RPA.)  Our work program for the next few years will be focused on developing 12 Area Plans that cover all of Hamilton County.  We will also be developing more detailed Station Area Plans / TODs in some of those areas.

For the past 18 months, the CPD division has managed the creation of a new Downtown Form-Based Code, which was adopted by the City Council on July 5, 2016.  For the next few months, we will continue to work closely with other City departments to ensure a smooth implementation of the new code. We recently completed a Public Spaces project, which included schematic designs for multiple projects, including a park, a riverwalk trail, and streetscape improvements.

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for providing professional expertise in all aspects of the planning and development process, including policy formulation, neighborhood planning, transportation planning, land use and redevelopment.  Duties include developing long-range plans to comply with federal guidelines; administering local zoning; conducting research and analyses; and performing long-range projects related to neighborhood planning, transportation planning, land use and urban redevelopment. Work requires limited supervision and the use of independent judgment and discretion.

Successful candidates for this position should have strong experience in community planning as well as a background in urban design or a related field.  Experience with GIS, as part of community planning and analysis, is also important.
