Organization

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated senior-level staff member for our nationally recognized multimodal planning practices in the San Francisco office. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in supporting and growing our leading work in developing transportation systems for vibrant, livable communities in the San Francisco area and around the country. We are seeking an individual with at least seven years of experience in either/both: a) integrated, multimodal transportation planning as well as some background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility; or b) small- and large-scale parking and/or transportation demand management (TDM) projects for both public and private sector clients.  Additional experience and expertise is welcome.

Job Description

Multimodal Planner:

The ideal candidate for the multimodal planner position should have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience, preferably with a focus on multimodal planning and design. A candidate should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five of the following areas:

  • Citywide transportation planning and analysis 
  • Campus transportation planning 
  • Parking management 
  • Bicycle/pedestrian facility planning 
  • Street design guidelines 
  • Data collection and performance assessments 
  • Multimodal/intermodal facility planning 
  • Transit station area planning 
  • Transit service planning 
  • Transportation demand management 
  • Transport policy, funding, and governance 
  • Paratransit and demand-responsive services 
  • Advanced graphics communications (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp, Photoshop)
  • Computer traffic modeling (Synchro, VISSIM, TransCAD) 

 

Parking/Transportation Demand Management Planner:

The ideal candidate should have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience, but should have demonstrated experience in parking and TDM. A successful candidate should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five of the following areas:

  • Management of parking studies, ranging from individual sites to large, mixed-use downtowns
  • Design and management of parking data collection and analysis (i.e. inventory, utilization, and turnover)
  • Parking demand analysis at site-specific and area-wide levels, including familiarity with shared parking analysis and modeling
  • Parking and TDM zoning code assessment and ability to rewrite code language 
  • Parking operations, management, enforcement, and/or finance 
  • Parking facility design and engineering 
  • TDM programs, policies, and best practices that reduce single-occupant vehicle (SOV) travel
  • Campus (academic, institutional, corporate, medical) transportation planning 
  • Existing and emerging parking and TDM technology tools and applications 
  • On-the-ground TDM implementation, such as TDM/mobility coordinator 
  • Parking and TDM-related outreach, marketing, and/or promotion 
  • Other transportation planning expertise, such as active transportation, transit planning, paratransit, street design and engineering, traffic modeling, funding or finance, or strategic planning

 

Successful applicants for either position will be expected to:

  • Function as a project manager and as a lead planner 
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills 
  • Possess proven experience in managing projects within budget 
  • Work successfully with clients, members of the public, and project teams 
  • Outline and prepare successful proposals and reports 
  • Analyze a wide range of transportation data and complete (directly or manage the completion of) technical analysis, feasibility studies, or other transportation reports
  • Prepare and give effective presentations 
  • Creatively solve multimodal transportation problems 
  • Participate in firm-wide strategic planning activities to ensure continued growth of the firm’s mission and core values
  • Mentor and train junior staff to become as good, or even better, at their job as you
  • Organize and supervise data collection activities in the office and the field
  • Market Nelson\Nygaard’s work and expertise 
  • Be able to meet annual business development targets 

 

Projects for either position may be located anywhere throughout the United States, and thus a willingness and desire to travel is essential. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s senior and junior staff in the San Francisco office and also staff in our other offices throughout the country.

Qualifications

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • At least seven years of responsible experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, or a related field
  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree in urban or transportation planning, or a related planning field; master’s degree is preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitation of public workshops
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget 
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 
  • Aptitude for and/or experience in business development (i.e., winning work); if you have public agency experience, grant writing and successful RFP development are applicable skills

 

The annual salary range equivalent for this position is industry competitive, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, pre-tax transit or bicycling benefit, a 401k program, life insurance and paid time off.
