How policy shapes communities

As we head into CNU 25.Seattle next week, it's important to remember that the sprawling built environment that makes up most of our metropolitan areas is not the result of poor design or the free market alone. This slide by Joe Minicozzi of Urban3, who will be in Seattle, makes clear that public policies like land-use regulations, parking requirements, and thoroughfare design standards and practices have powerfully shaped our communities. CNU 25 will feature much discussion on complete streets, form-based codes, and lean approaches to fixing or getting around public policy that promotes fragmented communities.
