Coastal Conservation League

The Conservation League is a non-profit conservation organization that has been working with communities, elected officials, businesses, and citizen groups since 1989 to protect the natural environment and quality of life along the South Carolina coast.

Job Description

The Coastal Conservation League (“League”) seeks a North Coast Office Director for its Georgetown office. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter with a track record of demonstrated initiative. The Director must be able to succeed in a dynamic environment, and capable of identifying and managing diverse projects in a high-pressure setting. Conservation League programmatic work issues often requires/need addressing after work hours, and the Director must be willing to respond. He/she must demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and constant attention to detail. The culture of the organization is one that values hard work, initiative, independence, passion, dedication, and getting the job done -- regardless of size. Conservation League employees are opportunistic, hard-working, entrepreneurial, tenacious, creative and results-driven. The candidate must be a fast learner. The North Coast Office Director will build and manage networks with citizens, businesses, and public officials. This work requires:

  • Representing the Conservation League in the community
  • Overseeing all North Coast projects (planning, policy, and regulations)
  • Writing for media, grants, and other publications
  • Developing and creating communication materials, including:
    •  Social media and web-based communications
    • Traditional media
  • Managing the North Coast Office budget
  • Leading the North Coast program work
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively express and convey programmatic issues at board meetings, conferences, legislative and regulatory hearings, and events
  • Working with a diverse set of interest groups
  • Thinking critically and strategically about complex policy and regulatory issues
  • Organizing public opposition and support at the community and state level
  • Developing relationships with Conservation League Board members, donors, and members
  • Supporting GrowFood Carolina and other Conservation League initiatives in the North Coast as needed
  • Staying current on local news by reading and engaging in community outreach
  • Developing and implementing an effective strategy for each project, while distinguishing between the elements that should be discussed with Chief Conservation Office and/or Executive Director
  • Developing and advocating for legislative policy relevant to North Coast issues

This employee plans and executes diverse projects under multiple deadlines, manages internal and external relationships, and makes decisions in a variety of situations. This position requires strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, as well as attention to detail. The North Coast Office Director must be a team player able to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment. She/he must be flexible, adaptable, and willing to perform diverse duties beyond those stated explicitly in the job description. Candidate must be able to multi-task and work well under pressure.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Three years of relevant work or volunteer experience
  • Willingness and ability to attend events beyond work hours
  • Experience with grassroots advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated writing skills

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree (MBA, JD, MA, etc.).
  • At least five years of experience in land use.

The successful candidate must demonstrate passion for environmental advocacy work and enjoy working with and meeting people. He/She must also have an appreciation for the Lowcountry. This is a full-time position is located in our Georgetown, SC office.
