Mid to Senior-Level Planner

Orion Planning + Design (OPD) is hiring a full-time mid- to senior-level planner who can perform high-quality research, analysis, and product creation in the areas of general planning (comprehensive, area, corridor, etc.) and land development codes (primarily zoning and subdivision regulations). OPD is a Montana-based planning and design firm that serves clients nationwide. We are looking for a professional planner who can work creatively, independently, and collegially as a member of our collaborative firm. The successful candidate will be a self-starter able to assist on multiple projects promptly from a remote office (e.g., home-based or project site) and at project sites when necessary to assist partners as needed with public engagement and other client services. The planner will substantively contribute written and analytical work for projects managed by the firm's partners. As directed by partners, the planner must be willing and able to:

  • Communicate with clients, primes, and sub-contractors to coordinate client and public engagement and deliverables.
  • Translate a project's proposed scope of work into a draft work plan, dividing pieces between project team members and setting internal deadlines to ensure the overall project is delivered on time.
  • Assist with coordinating on-site meeting schedules and travel plans for multiple team members.
  • Manage their portion of a project budget, including travel expenses.
  • Assist with monthly assessment and recordkeeping of project progress against milestones and budget.
  • When requested, lead or co-lead meetings with clients, primes, and subs on partners' behalf.
  • Collect and present a variety of statistical data from trusted sources related to planning projects.
  • Create and manage surveys in SurveyMonkey.
  • Create and manage project websites and social media as needed.
  • Facilitate public meetings and small-group planning exercises, including speaking before groups of people and guiding group discussions.
  • Review and audit land development regulations and other public policies in preparation for code updates and rewrites.
  • Monitor RFPs, coordinate proposals, and maintain an ongoing list of response deadlines and requirements.

This position will require overnight and day travel, primarily in the continental U.S. However, travel outside the continental U.S. may occasionally be required or optional.

The successful candidate will be expected to display a high level of professionalism, political acumen, and discretion when representing OPD. All candidates must hold a master's degree in planning or a planning-related field with at least three years of professional experience or a bachelor's degree and eight years of professional experience. AICP certification is required. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs, ArcGIS, Adobe InDesign, and SurveyMonkey is required. Additional proficiencies in Illustrator, Photoshop, SketchUp, and other productivity and engagement software related to planning, public participation, and design is a plus. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
