Planning Division Chief

Salary: $85,345.00 - $151,149.00 Annually

The Prince George’s County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking a Division Chief for the Community Planning Division. This public-sector job offers the right candidate the opportunity to work within an award-winning planning department to affect significant development in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Prince George’s County is located in the metropolitan region of Washington, D.C. The region’s many economic, historic, and natural assets have attracted new industries, jobs and population, resulting in a booming economy. In addition to its close proximity to the nation’s capital, the County is diversifying economically by attracting jobs in technology, health care, and hospitality. With 15 Metro stations located in the County, transit-oriented, mixed-use development in proximity to our Metro stations has become a high priority. A diverse population of approximately 900,000 residents, who are very active in the planning and development process, requires the Prince George’s County Planning Department to operate on the cutting edge of innovation and service levels.

The Community Planning Division is responsible for managing the County’s comprehensive planning process. This division prepares plans and studies used to guide future growth and physical development in the County. Considerable community outreach is performed to ensure meaningful public participation and engagement in all projects, plans, and studies. The five major programs within the Community Planning Division are: Master Plans, Sectional Map Amendments, Specialized Planning Studies, Planning Assistance to Municipalities and Communities Program, and Plan Implementation.

Examples of Important Duties
Under general direction of the Planning Director, the ideal candidate will manage a planning division and/or several interdisciplinary teams that perform difficult professional planning work involving considerable responsibility, complexity and variety. The work may include oversight of master plans and regulatory functions and providing direction, organization, and coordination of planning recommendations to the Planning Board and County Council for consideration. This individual will also manage a significant budget, set work standards and work assignments, as well as, review major projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in planning, parks, architecture, engineering, environmental science, or related subjects; and
  • Eight years of a broad range of planning and/or regulatory related experience that included four years of supervisory experience or four years as a planning coordinator; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
