Senior Planner

Company Overview
Fisher Associates is a growing professional design services firm headquartered in Rochester’s dynamic downtown. Beyond Rochester, we have New York offices in Buffalo, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Syracuse, a Pennsylvania office in Pittsburgh, an office in Houston, Texas, and remote employees across the US. Our multi- disciplinary staff includes planners, urban designers, GIS analysts, regulatory specialists, environmental scientists, landscape architects, surveyors, and civil, electrical, & transportation engineers.

Fisher Associates Planning Group is seeking a full-time Planner to join our planning team. The planning team completes a wide range of planning projects including brownfield redevelopment, transportation/parking, land use and zoning, environmental (SEQRA, NEPA), urban design, grant assistance, economic development, site development, municipal and agency applications/reviews, and public engagement. Under general supervision of the Director of Planning or Senior Planner, this position will assist with the day-to-day operations of Fisher's Planning Group, maintaining a flexible schedule according to project workloads.

Our studio is currently operating under a flexible hybrid work model in which employees can work from a remote location part-time.

Summary/Objective
We are currently looking for Planners with 5-10 years of experience to join our award-winning collaborative team working from one of our NY office locations in Rochester, Buffalo, Ithaca, Syracuse, or Binghamton. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual who can work in a fast-paced and collaborative professional environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform advanced research, analytical, and statistical tasks
  • Prepare land use recommendations, design and development guidelines and comprehensive planning direction
  • Prepare maps and graphics
  • Create digital and print presentation materials Assist in writing a variety of planning documents, publications, forms, reports, memoranda, and grant applications
  • Assist with State Environmental Quality (SEQRA) reviews, preparation of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and related documentation, and National Environmental Policy Act reviews (NEPA)
  • Assist with municipal entitlement processes (site plan review, variances, planned unit developments, historic preservation approvals, etc.)
  • Attend, support, and prepare summaries for public, stakeholder, and advisory meetings
  • Perform field visits, measurements, or calculations
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, co-workers, and project teams
  • Stay informed of new developments and techniques in planning practice areas

Essential Skills:

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical, research and creative skills
  • Strong understanding of (and passion for) “Smart Growth” principals and good community design practices
  • Strong ability to create maps, graphic designs, and publications
  • Ability to write, review and interpret zoning codes and environmental laws, regulations, and policies
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big picture goals in mind
  • Familiarity and experience with land use and environmental regulations
  • Familiarity and experience with the provisions of SEQRA
  • Willingness to assume new roles and mentor junior staff. Candidate will be expected to manage projects and/or assist with project management activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Urban, Community or Regional Planning or a related field from an accredited university
  • 5-10 years relevant planning experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer software including Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Sketchup preferred
  • AICP preferred
