Urban Planner

Position Description
Gould Evans is seeking a full-time Urban Planner to work as part of our collaborative design and architecture studio. This is a great opportunity to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the planning and design challenges for the built environment, through various stages of design. Remote work is an option for this role, but candidates available to work in Kansas City are preferred. Ideal candidate would have 1- 5 years of experience; a professional degree, strong comprehension of urban design principles, experience interpreting and drafting development regulations, and an aptitude for problem solving.

Primary responsibilities of the position:

  • Assist in the analysis, ideation, organization, and preparation of innovative regulatory documents including zoning or unified development ordinances, subdivision regulation and other public documents to address the needs of varied clients and development settings.
  • Conduct the review, analysis, and documentation of development codes, and identify impacts on planning policies and built outcomes.
  • Translate community needs and aspirations to standards and guidelines, with an emphasis on urban design.
  • Participate in the policy planning, urban design, and design details of a variety of projects including, comprehensive and visioning plans, urban design plans and site and development planning.
  • Participate in development review applications for rezoning, site plan approvals, platting, variances, conditional uses, and similar development applications as necessary for clients.
  • Provide intellectual knowledge and support to a growing and evolving planning and design studio as it impacts the quality of communities and cities.
  • Support marketing efforts and assume other duties as dictated by workload.

We're seeking a candidate with:

  • Interest in land use law and the creation of innovative development regulations.
  • Understanding and experience in the application / implementation of development regulations.
  • A desire to improve development regulations to help shape communities.
  • Excellent writing skills, and the use of various production platforms and tools, to support graphic production.
  • The ability to convey and/or illustrate new ideas both independently and in collaboration.
  • Strong analytical skills – visual perception, document review, and data gathering and analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, and experience presenting to the public and government officials.
