The Planning and Development Department was recently consolidated and rebranded as the Development Services Department in January 2020. The Development Services Department focuses on promoting orderly growth and development, safe construction, and neighborhood vitality; and collaborates with developers, property owners, and residents, to ensure safe and sustainable development while providing exceptional customer experiences. The Development Services Department encompasses Development Coordination, Development Engineering, Zoning and Design Review, and Permitting and Inspections services. The Opportunity
Opportunities are available for highly seasoned and accomplished professionals to assist in leading the activities of the Development Services Department. These positions will maintain or enhance the quality of life in The City of Fort Worth in the following way:

The Assistant Director for the Zoning and Design Review Division of Development Services will be responsible for coordinating staff in land use planning, land development design review, special projects, and managing the division’s budgeting and personnel decisions. Work also involves interpreting the City’s Zoning Ordinance for development and use of property within city limits in accordance with state law, recommending map amendments (zoning district changes for property) and text amendments to the Zoning Commission and City Council in accordance with the City’s Comprehensive Plan, consulting with community leaders and property owners in creating and vetting City-initiated zoning amendments, and providing guidance to staff in the Zoning Section, Preservation & Design Section, and Zoning Appeals Section.

The Assistant Director for the Development Coordination Division of Development Services will be responsible for coordinating development staff in land development and subdivision review, development contract management, special project facilitation, and managing business process improvement initiatives. Work also involves administering the Subdivision Ordinance in accordance with state law, managing the city’s Transportation Impact Fee Program and associated transportation capital improvement plan, gathering and analyzing development process metrics, and making data-driven recommendations that result in implementing process improvements aimed at streamlining the development review process.

The Assistant Directors will also assist the Director of Development Services in the development and implementation of budgets, policies, programs, practices, and procedures required to lead and manage the Department.

The successful candidates will be adept in managing organizational change and have the ability to collaborate and build strong partnerships with developers, property owners, residents, neighborhood organizations, community groups, other City departments, and other governmental agencies.

We expect an Assistant Director of Development Services to be detail-oriented with good business sense and strong negotiation skills. Assistant Directors should be innovative problem solvers who are passionate about improving the quality of life for residents of Fort Worth. Exceptional interpersonal skills are essential. Education & Experience
This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Planning, Urban Planning or Design, Public Administration, Urban Geography, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field and six (6) or more years of responsible experience in city planning and/or development with a minimum of four (4) years in a supervisory/management role. A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or Design, Public Administration, Urban Geography, Civil Engineering, or closely related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
