Job Description

Kendig Keast Collaborative (KKC) seeks to immediately hire a Senior Associate with a variety of land use planning skills for our community planning and land development regulations writing practice. This individual will join a national consulting firm with over 35 years of successful client interaction. We seek candidates who have the background and drive to assist us in drafting long-range plans, land development regulations, and other master plans and projects (e.g., corridors, downtowns/districts, parks and trails, etc.).

We seek an individual with well-rounded experience in both plan writing and regulatory drafting who can work proficiently on both types of projects. The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of experience in both long-range community planning and in drafting development regulations, with a preference for those with related experience in both consulting and in direct local government work. Examples of applying an entrepreneurial approach within a public agency may substitute for consulting experience.

Experience with online and in-person community outreach and public engagement activities is also desired, particularly related to facilitating stakeholder and leadership consensus that enables successful adoption and implementation of plans and land development regulations. A master’s degree in urban planning or a closely related field is preferred, although a combination of a bachelor’s degree and related professional experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will immediately serve as a deputy project manager, in coordination with KKC principals, and will evolve into a lead project management role based on effective performance and familiarity with the firm’s approach and practices. Specific duties will include: directly managing community planning and development regulations projects; supporting similar projects led by other KKC personnel; facilitating the overall plan writing and regulatory drafting/amendment process (including ensuring conformance with the unique statutory framework of each state where KKC initiates a project); completing hands-on aspects of the work (including research and data collection, field reconnaissance, and writing and editing); interacting with client representatives and constituents; overseeing budgets and schedules; and ensuring responsiveness and client satisfaction. Senior personnel also participate in business development activities and help to expand our areas of practice. This includes writing responses to Requests for Proposals, securing speaking engagements, lead roles in seminars and continuing education programs, and publication opportunities to continue our leadership role within the urban planning profession. Periodic travel to client communities and for business development activities will be necessary.

Strong writing, presentation, graphic, analytical, and computer skills are essential for the successful applicant. At a minimum, the applicant must clearly demonstrate competence with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Preference will be given to those with additional skills working with ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc.), and SketchUp. Knowledge of the HTML programming language to draft regulations directly in and to support our proprietary software is also desirable. Experience in land development and project design is a plus. In addition to these technical capabilities, the candidate we seek must be highly motivated, entrepreneurial, and energetic; diligent, thorough, well-organized and detail oriented; personable; curious to learn about the communities we serve; and eager for exposure to new subjects and opportunities for professional growth and career advancement.

Applicants with the above attributes and minimum qualifications are required to submit a resume, a detailed cover letter describing your directly related experience, skills and education, along with your interest in our firm. Candidates selected to interview will be asked to submit plans and regulatory provisions authored primarily by the applicant.
