Senior City Planner - Transportation & Mobility - Public Works
About Position:The City and County of Denver is seeking a highly qualified planning professional with expertise in multimodal transportation innovation; transit, pedestrian, and bicycle planning; concept design; and project and program management. This position is responsible for leading the implementation of the Transit and Corridor program within the Transportation and Mobility Planning Division of Denver Public Works. Public Works Transportation and Mobility Planning is responsible for planning, designing, and operating the transportation and mobility infrastructure for the City and County of Denver (CCD). The division is responsible for programming changes to the city's multimodal transportation system. It also reviews, evaluates, implements, and maintains transportation system improvements. The staff in the Planning Division are leaders in urban transportation and work to implement the Mayor’s Mobility Action Plan.
About the Denver Public Works: Denver Public Works delivers services that help to define and improve the quality of life in Denver. Denver Public Works is responsible for road maintenance and repair; residential trash, recycling and compost collection; design and construction of streets, bridges, public buildings, and storm and sanitary sewers; transportation and parking services; oversight and regulation of use of the public right-of-way; and implementation of the Public Works Environmental Management System (EMS).
Job Duties And Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Participates in the implementation of Denver Moves and ensures that other programs/projects and applicable regulations, are consistent with the Denver Moves principles and networks.
- Coordinate complex planning and concept design projects that support the implementation of Denver Moves and which often require coordination of consultants and with multiple Public Works divisions, City departments, RTD, other external agencies and/or/multi-jurisdictions.
- Create project scopes of work and schedules which may include preparation of existing conditions assessment, environmental research and assessment, public involvement, data analysis, timelines, and budget.
- Develop long and short-term plans and designs involving transit and corridor transportation planning initiatives related to capital investment corridors, speed and reliability improvements, bus stop enhancements, and frequent transit network initiatives.
- Compose grant proposals to support implementation of transit and “complete streets” programs and projects.
- Serve as a technical advisor to neighborhood groups, City Council, advocates, and other stakeholders on transit and corridor related issues.
- Facilitate meetings and/or presentations to bring together interested stakeholders to discuss proposed transportation planning initiatives, assess obstacles, evaluate opposing views and interests, and determine areas of support.
While the full pay range of this Job Classification is $72,414.00 - $115,862.00, our target hiring salary for this position is between $72,414.00 - $94,138.00, depending on education, experience and qualifications.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Master’s Degree in City or Regional Planning, Engineering, Public Policy and Administration or a directly related degree.
- Three years of professional experience in city or regional planning specifically related to transportation and infrastructure planning with at least one of those years specializing in transit planning and its relationship with transportation engineering
- Experience with design and implementation of transit and corridor projects including, transit facilities and operations, bus stop enhancements, and other related improvements.
- Self-motivated and motivated to help others.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the MUTCD, AASHTO, and NACTO design guidelines is required.
- Proficient in Geographic Information Systems, Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite programs
- Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of application.

- Education: Master's Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Engineering, or a directly related degree.
- Experience: Qualifications: Three (3) years of professional planning experience.
- Licensures / Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
- Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
