Livable Cities for the 21st Century

The paradigms for city planning changed radically around 1960: Modernism became dominant and the invasion of motorcars began in earnest. In the process, care and attention for the way people use cities—for centuries looked after by tradition and experience—was left completely behind. This is the story told by Jan Gehl, founder of Gehl Architects, in his book Cities for People (Island Press, 2010) which goes on to describe why looking after people is crucial for the quality of cities as in the 21st century. City transformations and mobility strategies from Denmark, USA, Australia, and Russia will serve as examples of this renewed focus on people-oriented city planning.
