CNU New York invites you to come to Chautauqua to discuss regional issues, looking toward CNU 22 in Buffalo in 2014.

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is the nationally-recognized source of professional expertise on how to improve, restore and create more livable cities, towns, villages and neighborhoods. CNU’'s annual Congress (to be held in Buffalo in June 2014) is a leading venue for New Urbanist education, collaboration and networking.

As a prelude to the Buffalo Congress, CNU’s New York State Chapter is holding a “Retreat,” Friday-Sunday, October 10-12, 2012, in the historical setting of the Chautauqua Institution. The Retreat will provide a relaxed atmosphere to learn about how New Urbanism and Smart Growth can help activists, developers, professionals and local officials leverage their resources, infrastructure and location to uncover the diamonds in the Rust Belt and improve their communities.

Who should go?

  • Activists interested in smart growth, sustainable policies and practices
  • Architects
  • Planners interested in smart code and context sensitive solutions
  • Developers interested in financing and marketing the best projects
  • Local officials, in New York State and nearby states and provinces
  • and New Urbanists from all over the country
  • ...And anyone interested in the redevelopment potential of regions such as:

  • Upstate New York
  • Northern Ohio
  • Lower Michigan
  • Western Pennsylvania
  • The Great Lakes region
  • Chautauqua is a lakeside resort community, over 100 years old, southwest of Buffalo. Chautauqua was an inspiration to the first generation of New Urbanists in their search for traditional town plans.

Expect a relaxed program with plenty of time for conversation, organizing and networking, featuring marquee speakers, as well as local activists and professionals. This is an opportunity to learn about New Urbanism and get involved in the region where we will meet in 2014. A draft agenda for the retreat is available here: draft agenda.

Application will be made for AIA, APA, ASLA and CNU-A credits.
