Growing up in smalltown Indiana, Jon has seen his share of sprawl and loss of farmland, thus drawing him to New Urbanism. Jon attended Calvin College, earning a BA in geography with additional course work in urban planning, environmental studies, and biology. After graduating, he worked and studied at an environmental science field school in Washington, then took a six-month internship with Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve on Whidbey Island doing GIS and land conservation work. Since moving to Chicago, he has interned part-time at the Chicago CNU office. He has also been an environmental science instructor with the Chicago Botanic Gardens and now teaches mural painting to children at an after-school program. Jon hopes to continue work and study in sustainable long-term planning, agricultural innovation, and possibly geography.
