Open Space and Urban Nodes: A Club Sandwich or Bowl of Grapes?

New urbanist conservation development pairs clustered activity nodes with open space preservation. If these nodes don’t integrate with neighbors and transportation networks, we get a “bowl of grapes” -- disconnected development and lost ecological potential. The alternative: a “club sandwich” where nodes and open space form interconnected networks. What are the tools for achieving this vision? How do we make the sum more than the parts?
